Montgomery Leather is William Montgomery’s one-bench workshop in Pollock Pines, up in the pines of El Dorado County. Everything sold under this name is cut, stitched, edged and finished here.
The work is done the slow way on purpose. Stitching is done by hand, which takes as long as it takes and produces a seam that fails one stitch at a time instead of unzipping all at once the way a machine lock-stitch does. Edges are burnished rather than painted. Patterns get prototyped, thrown out and cut again until the piece actually works for the person who has to carry it.
Some of it is traditional and some of it is just stubborn. There is a forge in the mix as well as a stitching pony, which is how the hardware and the tooling end up matching the leather instead of coming out of a catalog.
“I forgot how meditative stitching by hand can be. Hours and hours of endless repetition only broken by the occasional finishing know then on to the next piece. You can lose yourself in thought.”
